"Something was missing. So I built the thing I needed."

- Satish Varma, on founding Melbourne MAMA Community in 2017

If I'm being honest… this didn't start as a business.

When I moved to Australia as an international student, I was just another guy trying to figure life out. New country, new system, new people. But the one thing I kept feeling was… something was missing.

There were Indians around me. There was a community. But it didn't feel like I belonged anywhere completely.

"That feeling stayed with me."

So I did something very simple. I started bringing people together. Small meetups. Casual conversations. Celebrating festivals the way we used to back home. That slowly became what we now call Melbourne MAMA Community.

We started in 2017 as an international student-led community to bridge the gap between students and the Indian - especially Telugu - diaspora in Australia. Jobs, accommodation, visas. A real home away from home.

"We didn't think of scale. We just didn't want people to feel alone."

Over time, people didn't just want connection. They wanted direction. They wanted to create something.

Parallelly, I was building my own professional journey - working across content, marketing, film promotions, creator strategies. Understanding how brands grow, how content works, how audiences connect.

Content without community feels empty. And community without direction eventually fades. So bringing both together became the next step.

That's how Melbourne MAMA Creative Space happened. Not as a big idea. Just as a natural evolution - from people meeting, to people creating, to people building something together.

"That's the story. And we're still writing it."
